Instructor Indigenous Reconciliation (full time):

The I. H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba (UM) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time Instructor in Indigenous Reconciliation. This opportunity is open to individuals who are Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023, or sooner. This position may be filled at the rank of Instructor I, Instructor II, or Senior Instructor. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position builds on the Asper School’s ongoing commitment to promote reconciliation through business scholarship at all levels and throughout our relations with the business community, as entrenched in our strategic plan Pursuing our Asper-ations. The School’s Committee on Indigenous Business Scholarship (CIBS) is one of the four standing committees of our Faculty Council, and our Indigenous Business Education Partners (IBEP) program was founded in 1994 to attract and support Indigenous students from application to graduation including in their development as leaders. IBEP initiatives such the Visionary Indigenous Business Excellence Awards (VIBE, founded in 2005) and the annual Future of Indigenous Business Banquet (co-hosted by University of Manitoba Indigenous Commerce Students) add to our vibrant faculty culture. In short, we seek to be a community in which Indigenous scholars and students succeed, lead, and thrive. Our efforts are enhanced by deep infrastructural supports at the UM, such as the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous. The UM, home to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, takes its commitment to reconciliation seriously.

Essential to our success in this strategy, we are recruiting for two Indigenous designated faculty positions, one Instructor (full time/probationary), and one tenured/tenure track (separate advertisement).  For the Instructor position, we seek Indigenous candidates with expertise in any business/management area or related fields (e.g., Indigenous studies, history, economics, politics) and an understanding of TRC Call to Action #92, who hold a Masters degree or equivalent expertise/qualification. We will be open to candidates with strong experience in teaching and/or consulting and work experience in related areas.

Responsibilities:
Duties encompass teaching primarily at the undergraduate but also in professional graduate programs, and professional service for the School, University, and community.

With regards to teaching, we welcome and expect the successful candidate to provide input and guidance for courses related to Indigenous content. This includes taking a leadership role in a new course entitled “Indigenous Peoples and Canadian Business,” which is in the final stages of approval to become a core required course for all Asper undergraduate students. This is the first such core course in a business program in all of Canada that we are aware of.  In addition, the successful candidate may develop new Asper courses in their area which can be added to the courses in Asper’s Indigenous Business Studies Program, a longstanding multi-disciplinary program where students earn a Bachelor of Commerce with a Major in Indigenous Business Studies. There is also an opportunity to develop new course offerings at the professional graduate program level, related to the candidate’s expertise and interest, that assist the School in meeting our dedication to TRC Call to Action #92.

With regards to service, the Instructor in Indigenous Reconciliation would be asked to serve on both School and University committees, and in relevant collaborations across the School and more broadly. Service duties will be explicitly recognized and considered in assigning teaching duties and in the promotion process.

Qualifications:
Please state in your cover letter what you bring to this position, including relevant experience and/or expertise in teaching, service and relations with Indigenous communities. A Masters degree is preferable (but not required) and ideally candidates will show successful experience in teaching, training or related areas, and provide evidence of strong knowledge and effective course development and delivery, communication skills, and student development. This full-time probationary position may be filled at the rank of Instructor I, Instructor II, or Senior Instructor, with salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Asper School of Business is located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. The Asper School is the principal business school in the Province of Manitoba and is accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) among the top 5% of business schools internationally. The Indigenous economy in Manitoba is growing at a rapid pace. While in 2016 it was estimated that the Indigenous contribution to GDP was in excess of 9.3 billion dollars, a figure that is set to grow as a result of a very active Indigenous business community.
