Job Summary
The Assistant Controller’s role is responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records for UCSF Health entities encompassing developing, implementing and monitoring accounting systems, policies and procedures. The Assistant Controller’s role is to assist the Controller in the managing of the financial reporting of UCSF Health. Hospital Accounting is broken out into General Accounting, Revenue Accounting and Cash Accounting. The Assistant Controller would be responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing the work done in these areas including researching and assessing high risk or unusual transactions, coordinating internal and external reporting and presenting to various levels of management. The position would also be responsible for developing and directing special project work. Establishes objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinate managers. Reviews and approves recommendations for department programs. Involved in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and may also have organization-wide effect. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years of managerial experience;
  • Seven years of experience in finance, accounting, business and systems operations, and regulatory compliance requirements;
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related area and/or equivalent experience/training/ extensive accounting coursework;
  • Must have a deep knowledge of accounting principles and procedures;
  • Proven ability to identify process improvements and lead process owners through successful change management;
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels;
  • Excellent skills using common desktop/web applications;
  • Excellent service orientation skills; strong skills in management and leadership; excellent ability to use critical thinking, sound judgment, and decision-making skills to creatively solve problems;
  • Strong knowledge of industry best practices;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong understanding of accounting treatments for joint ventures and related parties, capital budgeting and management, of revenue recognition accounting in the physician and/or hospital industry;
  • Proven ability to identify process improvements and lead process owners through successful change management;
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred
  • Five or more years of healthcare experience in finance/accounting or Public Accounting experience with focus in healthcare clients
  • Thorough knowledge of the organization's operational, personnel, and financial transactions and systems
  • Experience with large organizations
  • University Accounting experience
  • PeopleSoft
  • Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) experience
  • Advanced Excel skills/ PowerPoint
  • Database skills
