Position Description
UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON. The College of Built Environments at the University of Washington in Seattle is seeking a dynamic leader for the full-time position of Chair of the Runstad Department of Real Estate.
The department offers a Master’s of Science degree, two graduate certificates in real estate and housing studies, and an undergraduate minor in real estate. The Department provides instruction to about 60 graduate and undergraduate students across the university. There are 5 full-time tenured and tenure track faculty, one half-time lecturer and 14 affiliate lecturers from industry as well as three staff members.
The department enjoys an outstanding reputation within the industry. This is reflected in an Advisory Board made up of leading real estate practitioners from the community. The Board’s annual dinner has become a premier event for real estate professionals in Seattle.
The Runstad Department of Real Estate is one of five departments within the College of Built Environments. The Chair will lead the department, mentor and support faculty, staff and students, administer departmental budgets, develop quarterly teaching schedules, supervise staff, participate in fundraising and meet regularly with industry leaders. The Chair will have a teaching load of about three to four courses per academic year; this is negotiable, however. The Chair will also serve on the Executive Committee of the College and will work with college administrators and staff, and with the Chairs of the other departments to advance the mission of the Department, College, and University.
The Runstad Department engages in research and teaching to advance the development, financing and management of real estate projects which contribute to creating an equitable and resilient built environment. It embraces collaborative approaches to interdisciplinary teaching and research in order to support its mission. The appointment will be untenured and will be made at the senior lecturer level. The base academic appointment is for nine months with two additional summer months of compensation while serving as Chair. The appointment is for three years; however, the exact period is negotiable. The start date for this position is negotiable, but may be as early as January 1, 2020.
Qualifications
Hold at least a master’s degree in a related field.
A reputation for excellence in practice and/or research in real estate investment, housing, asset management or development.
Prior teaching experience is desired.
Academic and/or organizational leadership and mentoring experience will be considered in the evaluation of candidates.
